Services for Parents

A key part in the success of a treatment programme will be ensuring that it works for you and your family or support network. A bespoke, family and child-centred package is developed for each client, using evidence-based therapy approaches. Together, we will set clear targets. These will be revisited on a regular basis to review progress.

Children learn the most when they are having fun, and young people are more responsive when they are relaxed in a safe and familiar environment, therefore we offer home visits as well as school and nursery visits.

If your child is receiving therapy through the NHS we will ask your permission to liaise with the NHS team, as collaboration between therapists is likely to improve outcomes for the child.

Assessment and Screening

In most cases an assessment or screening is required to identify your child’s specific strengths and needs before any therapy is carried out.

Assessment may focus on a wide range of communication skills including attention and listening, understanding of language, expressive language, speech sounds, fluency and social skills.

Full assessment includes a case history, observations and completion of a range of dynamic informal and formal assessments where appropriate.

The purpose of assessment is to establish your child’s current strengths and needs, determine whether therapy is needed and the best course of action; deciding on the frequency and type of intervention required. It also provides a baseline from which therapy targets can be set and future progress measured.

Assessment and screening is charged at the standard hourly rate. Depending on your child’s needs, assessment usually takes between one and three sessions. A written report is available upon request.

Therapy

There are many different types of therapy interventions for communication difficulties, depending on the child’s needs.

Therapy Interventions may include:

  • 1:1 sessions

  • Paired or group therapy if appropriate

  • A home programme with suggested fun activities to be practised between visits

  • A nursery or school programme with suggested activities/strategies to be used in the classroom and support with Individual Education Plan (IEP) targets if appropriate.

All services will be tailored specifically to individual needs and will focus on structured activities and play, which will help the child learn new skills.

For therapy to be most effective, we encourage parents or staff to observe therapy sessions if possible so that the activities we cover can be transferred and used at home and in the education environment for further reinforcement.
